Kraft Heinz Is Turning “Unmet Needs” Into Growth Opportunities

Consumer food preferences are becoming increasingly fragmented. Lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, plant-based diets, clean-label expectations, and demand for higher-protein options are reshaping what shoppers expect from mainstream brands.

The Kraft Heinz Company is responding by extending some of its biggest brands into these emerging consumer needs.

Key innovation moves:

• Philadelphia: Introducing a lactose-free cream cheese aimed at consumers who have historically been excluded from the category. Kraft Heinz estimates as many as 50 million U.S. consumers are affected by lactose intolerance.

• Velveeta: Expanding into gluten-free offerings, helping the brand reach consumers with dietary restrictions.

• Kraft Mac & Cheese: Moving beyond its traditional proposition with plant-based and higher-protein innovations.

• Heinz: Building on its core ketchup franchise with Heinz Simply, emphasizing recognizable ingredients and a cleaner-label proposition.

• Jell-O: Removing artificial colors and sweeteners to respond to changing ingredient expectations.

The strategic shift is significant.

Kraft Heinz generated approximately $25 billion in net sales in 2025, but organic sales declined 3.4% during the year as consumers became more cautious about highly processed foods and spending remained pressured by inflation.

The latest numbers suggest some stabilization, with organic sales declining 1.3% in Q2 2026.

The bigger opportunity is not simply launching “healthier” products. It is identifying consumer segments that established brands have historically failed to serve, and using innovation to bring those consumers back into the portfolio.

As Kraft Heinz’s President of Taste Elevation Jerome Drolet puts it, the company intends to “aggressively attack” emerging consumer trends and address unmet needs.

The takeaway: In a mature food market, growth may increasingly come not from selling more of the same product, but from making iconic brands relevant to consumers who previously could not, or would not, buy them.
